How to clear your read-later list on walks

The simplest way to finally read your saved articles is to stop reading them: turn them into audio and listen on a daily walk. Send articles to a read-aloud app as you find them, then press play when you head out the door. A 20-minute walk covers one or two long articles.

Why saved articles pile up

Saving is easy; reading needs a quiet half hour with free eyes, which rarely shows up. Walking time does show up every day. You just can't use your eyes for it.

The routine

1. Capture as you go

When you find something worth reading, tap Share › Readwalk instead of "Add to Reading List". It joins your listening queue straight away.

2. Line it up

Before your walk, glance at the library. Put the one you're most curious about first. Readwalk plays the next item automatically when one finishes.

3. Walk and listen

Lock your phone and go. Use your headphones' controls to pause or skip. If something important comes up, glance at the screen: each word is highlighted.

4. Speed up over time

Start at 1×. After a few walks, try 1.25×. Many people end up between 1.25× and 1.5×, which turns a 15-minute article into about 11 minutes.

5. Keep the queue short

A queue of 50 articles is as discouraging as a reading list of 50. Keep five or so ready, and archive anything that's been sitting there for a month. If you didn't miss it, you won't.

Works for PDFs and newsletters too

The same routine handles more than web articles. Reports and papers can be read aloud as PDFs, newsletters can be copied from Mail and pasted in, and printed handouts can be scanned with your camera. Anything that ends up in your library gets played in turn.

What about safety?

Keep the volume low enough to hear traffic, or use open-ear or transparency-mode headphones. Pause before crossing busy roads. Listening should make the walk better, not riskier.

How much can you get through?

Daily walk Words at 1× (~150/min) Words at 1.5×
15 minutes ~2,250 ~3,400
30 minutes ~4,500 ~6,750
45 minutes ~6,750 ~10,100

A typical long-read article is 2,000 to 5,000 words. A 30-minute walk at 1.5× clears one or two a day, or around 40 a month.

Frequently asked questions

What about articles behind a login?

Share the page from the app where you're signed in, or copy the article's text and paste it.

What if I don't walk?

The same routine works for commutes, cooking, laundry, the gym, or winding down in bed.

Should I use noise-cancelling headphones?

Not near traffic. Use transparency mode, open-ear headphones, or a single earbud so you can hear what's around you. Save full noise cancelling for trains and planes.

What if I lose focus mid-article?

It happens. Skip back a sentence or two, or glance at the highlighted text to find your place. Lighter pieces work better on busy streets; save dense reads for quiet paths.

Press play, and take it for a walk.
